Fognini, Giraldo move into Sao Paulo QFs

Sao Paulo, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) – Third-seeded Fabio Fognini and No.
6 seed Santiago Giraldo were a pair of second-round winners Thursday at the
Brasil Open.

The fiery Italian Fognini snuck past Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 1-6,
6-2, while the Colombian Giraldo overcame fellow South American Carlos Berlocq
of Argentina 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at this clay court event.

Two seeded players — No. 7 Fernando Verdasco and No. 8 Martin Klizan — both
lost in three sets. Dusan Lajovic outlasted Verdasco, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4,
while qualifier Joao Souza downed Klizan, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old upstart Italian lucky loser Luca Vanni outlasted Dutch
qualifier Thiemo de Bakker 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 to reach his first-ever ATP-
level quarterfinal.

This week’s winner will collect $80,850.
