Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) – Italians Sara Errani and Roberta
Vinci were among the winners Tuesday in the first round of the Rio Open.
The top-seeded Errani rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Teliana Pereira, while
the third-seeded Vinci moved on with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 triumph over Lucie
Hradecka.
American Bethanie Mattek-Sands also advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Danka
Kovinic. Mattek-Sands will next face second-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu, a
straight-set winner Monday in first-round action.
Germany’s Dinah Pfizenmaier rallied for a three-set win over Spanish qualifier
Estrella Cabeza Candela and will next play fourth-seeded American Madison
Brengle, who moved into the second round on Monday.
Other winners Tuesday included Brazilian wild card Beatriz Haddad Maia,
qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay, Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea and
Julia Glushko of Israel.
This week’s champion will claim $43,000.
