Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) – Top seed Sara Errani of Italy
beat Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia on Sunday to win the Rio Open.
Errani defeated Schmiedlova by a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 margin to claim her first WTA
title since 2013 in Acapulco.
The 27-year-old Errani improved to 8-9 in finals, with seven of those wins
coming on clay.
It was a rough start to the year for Errani, who lost in the first round of
each of the season’s first two events in Auckland and Sydney before an early
third-round exit at the Australian Open.
The sixth-seeded Schmiedlova was playing in her first final.
Errani took home $43,000 with the victory.
