Begu, Brengle advance in Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) – Second seed Irina-Camelia Begu
and No. 4 seed Madison Brengle of the United States were among Monday’s first-
round winners at the Rio Open tennis tournament.

The Romanian Begu blitzed Aussie Olivia Rogowska 6-1, 6-3, while Brengle
was leading Ana Bogdan 6-4, 3-3 when the Romanian qualifier retired on Day 1.

In other action involving seeds, No. 5 Swede Johanna Larsson snuck past
Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 4-2, retired and
American Grace Min upended No. 8 South African Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 6-1.

Also, Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino whipped qualifier Montserrat Gonzalez of
Paraguay 6-2, 6-2.

The top seeds this week is former French Open runner-up Sara Errani.

Japan’s Kurumi Nara, who is not defending her title this year, bested Czech
Klara Zakopalova in last year’s inaugural Rio finale.

This week’s champion will claim $43,000.
